Paediatric Neurodevelopmental Physiotherapy

Helping children move, learn, and find their own way forward.

A small Cape Town practice for babies, children, and adolescents with developmental, neurological, or movement difficulties.

Our approach is grounded in understanding the individual child, not just the diagnosis, and supporting families with care that is practical, considered, and family centred.

About the practice

A practice built around one child at a time.

I am Shane Brassell, a paediatric physiotherapist with a long standing focus on early identification and intervention for developmental difficulties in children.

For as long as I can remember I wanted to be a physiotherapist. I went to physio as a child and thought how good it was to help people while they had fun doing it. I now find myself a qualified physiotherapist working in the field I imagined, and I have been doing this work for more than thirteen years.

The practice operates from a property called PhysioKids in Cape Town. The clinical work itself is provided by Shane Brassell Physiotherapists, which is how the practice is formally registered with the HPCSA.

About the practice

Every child develops differently.

For many children, movement and play naturally build motor and sensory skills over time. For others, development may look a little different. It could be a mild delay, a coordination difficulty, a neurological condition, or a more complex developmental concern.

With the right support at the right time, neurodevelopmental physiotherapy can gently guide a child's development and help them find their own path forward. We work with babies, children, and teenagers across a range of developmental and neurological needs.

Conditions we work with

Developmental delays and milestone concerns

Prematurity and NICU follow up

Cerebral palsy and neurological conditions

Coordination and balance difficulties

Low muscle tone and postural challenges

Autism, ADHD, and neurodiverse presentations

Genetic syndromes

Orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions

Our approach

A learning base approach to movement.

We do not follow trends. We invest in a specific ethos: that movement is something a child learns, and that therapy works best when it supports learning rather than simply correcting symptoms.

At PhysioKids we work primarily with MAES Therapy, a neurological approach that helps us understand why movement may be difficult for a child, and how we can support her in learning more effective movement strategies. Rather than focusing on symptoms in isolation, we look at how a child moves, how she learns, how she participates in daily life, and how we can support long term development.

Therapy is always individualised, practical, and family centred. The child, the family, and the practitioner work together over time.

i.

How a child moves

Observing posture, coordination, and movement patterns as they are now.

ii.

How she learns

Understanding the way each child takes in and adapts new movement skills.

iii.

How she participates

Looking at the activities of daily life, play, and the family around the child.

iv.

How we support

Building long term development through considered, individualised therapy.

A learning base approach to movement.
